Review of Music Appreciation Summer 2015
I have to say that even though I think it is the part that took the most effort to learn I enjoyed the first section on music that we did. It worked out that I learned the notes and meters, etc. at the same time we were starting our son in guitar so I feel I will be able to help him read music now ( at least at first ha ;) ) The music blogs were interesting and I really enjoyed seeing everyone's selections each week. A lot of it I had never heard before and it is always good to expose yourself to new things. The downside of the music blog was just that it became a chore after awhile. I think it would have worked better if shorter music times or every other week or something. I will say I felt Ms. Mill's love of music and teaching about it come across all through our class. It is easier to stay tuned in to class when the person teaching is so connected to the material. I'm not gonna lie I am most likely going back to a life of listening to music as I think it is meant to be listened to: mindlessly while driving :). But I feel like I learned something from trying to break down and analyze parts of the songs. Overall I enjoyed the class very much. Thank you!!

So for this week I decided to go with two of my favs Frank and Dean. I love this era of music, I wish I could have seen them in Vegas in the day I am sure it was amazing ( well other than the horrible cloud of second hand smoke I am sure they left behind). I had a hard time deciding which song to talk about they are all great. I chose Chicago because it has such great instrumentation. Frank sings a few songs about Chicago and this is probably not the one you are thinking of, I am guessing you are thinking about My Kind of Town. This song must be 40's or 50's and I love the sound. It starts with brass and then becomes polyphonic with instruments and then homophonic when he sings. The instruments never overpower him but the horns really do a good job with the melody. Frank's voice has such a soothing tone color for me. I could listen to him all day. Dean Martin's That's Amore is another great one though. It has a really great Italian sound with the music. I can't identify all the instruments but I love it. They use imitation in the song with the background vocals.

I chose this because I assume this is what they were working on in the movie...not sure. It is very dark but I guess that would be obvious if it is for a death mass. I think I saw somewhere that it is in minor so that would go along with the darker notes. The dynamic changes really sort of make the song for me. I like that there are some vocals even though I have no idea what they are saying. They have what sounds like soprano and maybe baritone vocals together which adds interest. There were breaks so I am guessing they were different movements?? Not sure. This is not my style of music but I can see why his music has endured all this time. There are some polyphonic moments as well as homophonic. Final appraisal: dark but moving. If I was Saliari I may have tried to take credit for it too. ;)

Out of all of Kenny Chesney's songs I think Anything but Mine is my favorite even though Me and You ( my first dance at my wedding) is pretty close. It starts out with guitar and then adds more texture with additional instruments and then his vocals. There is a dynamic change with the chorus as he gets louder each time. The sound of his voice is just so easy to listen to for me. There is a guitar solo around 4:25 that I like it has a good beat. I like the woo hoo's in the back ground every once in awhile too . :) The very end when he sings the last lines is my favorite part. It is like a different recorded kind of sound. I have seen Kenny in concert like five times. He is a great performer, and side note he is super tiny up close! :) Me and You starts of with piano and then him singing which is a nice homophonic texture and then builds into a polyphonic texture. If this song comes on at a wedding or even just the radio my husband better come running because he knows I want to dance ;) Also in Please Come to Boston around 2:48 it sounds like he is gonna say sing and then remember he needs to say cling. It is more obvious on the CD I have but it is a live recording so mistakes will happen. We talked about this in class this week, the perfection needed in music performance, and I have to say I still love him tiny mistake or not. I know he has some newer stuff but I like this older stuff the best.

Okay, so I hate Pink Floyd in general. I have not heard anything of theirs that I don't change the station as soon as it comes on. My husband is big on classic rock and after we had a radio disagreement about it on the way home I decided to see what they had to offer other than the stuff that is always on the radio. I chose this because it was close to the fifteen minutes and I new I would have to listen to parts more than once to pick different things out. This starts of with a thick texture I think but it is from whatever the harmony sound is, that's what gets your attention. The guitar that accompanies it is a much more pleasant sound. Around 4 min the sound changes so I am guessing that part 2 is starting. This is a five part song which I think goes along with the movements we were talking about in class. It seems to be keeping some of the same four guitar notes into this section. Around 6:40 seems to be another change so maybe the 3rd part. Around 8:50 they started to sing. I would say the texture was polyphonic when is was just instruments and then homophonic and polyphonic at times with the vocals. Around 11:20 they added some sax which was okay I guess. I can't really identify the 5 parts for sure. Have to say I didn't like this at all. There is something about the sound or style of Pink Floyd that I just can't tolerate. This was a long 13-15 min for me. I listened to another song to make sure I got my time in and that was painful as well. :) Not a fan but to each his own I guess.

Okay, so I picked another group of music from the same person, this time Billy Joel. Hopefully you have all heard his music but it not you are missing out. He really is one of my favorites, I don't think I could even pick which of his songs is my favorite. I am choosing to talk about Piano Man but all the songs are great. Piano Man starts of with just the piano and then the harmonica comes in bringing more texture to the song. There are dynamic and pitch changes throughout the song. I think the song is largely homophonic but I feel sometimes with the piano and harmonica it is more polyphonic. There are times when it is just the piano so I guess it uses monophonic texture as well. The harmonica is my favorite part is just adds to much to the song. It is fun to watch him play the piano in the video because he really is an accomplished artist and has even written some classical songs. Enjoy!!!

So the first song One Scotch One Bourbon One Beer I have heard before but not in a Jazz sound. I really liked it this way. The next song had a really nice sound with the brass taking the lead. It was polyphonic and very smooth sounding. They had some nice piano sounds as well and it wasn't a solo by the piano but it was taking the lead or out front. The next song has female singers. There was a lead female vocal with several more women singing back up. It sounded like World War 2 era music to me, kind of a boogie woogie bugle boy sound to it. Brass seems to be used a lot in this music. Around 10:00 another song starts and this one has male and females singing. The music on the background provides harmony but does not overpower the singers at all. When the brass gets louder throughout they stop singing and it takes the front. I love old movies from this era so I really enjoyed these songs. The final song I listened to started with out with drums and then went into horns and the melody. This one was just instrumental like the second and it had a really nice sound.

So I was driving in my care shuffling XM stations and Daydream Believer came on the other day. Needless to say you could have charged admission to the concert in my car. :) I have loved this song since I was a kid even thought it was already pretty old by then. Every time I hear it is it just makes me smile. If you haven't heard it (which I doubt) you really should give it a try. It's starts out with a great little piano melody and then the lead singer takes front with the harmony in the background. You can see the band playing some instruments in the videos like piano, tambourine, and guitar but the horns and such that are added in are my favorite part. The pitch gets louder with the chorus and them comes back down for the verse. (as do I when I am singing in my car ;) ) When I think of sixties music the song styles or sounds in these videos is really what I think of. The Monkees have a very recognizable style or sound to me and Davy Jones with his British accent really makes this band for me.

I put Middle Age music in YouTube and found this. It starts with strings which are homophonic at first and then adds some voices that sound all female for a homophonic sound. As is continues it goes through the different instruments/songs listed by Roman Numerals, most it seems with Anonymous composers. It seems to be a compilation of different pieces of Middle Age music. I think I liked the sound best at around 4:30 and then 17:55. The instruments sounded nice together and had a relaxing pretty sound. I think both had the harp as the main instrument. Some of the singing was a little soprano and high pitched for me in the pieces that had signing, not to mention it wasn't in English so I have no idea what they were saying. I found the dates for the music interesting as they were from the 13th through the 17th century. It is amazing how this music is still around to enjoy or at least experience. This music is relaxing to listen, I felt like I could fall asleep while I was listening. I will say all the pieces kind of blended together for me and had a similar sound with the harp and lute.

Out of the three songs by Micheal Buble' I chose to talk about It's a Beautiful Day because I like it best :). I believe he wrote all three songs I listened. He used the typical singer in forward and instrumentation in the background for this song. He changes pitch and gets louder for the chorus and takes it down a little for the rest. I like that you can here some kind of a horn here and there doing like a scale down or something. The drums add to the beat and the guitar in the beginning does a good job leading into the vocals. The video is pretty cute and has a famous actress and Diet Pepsi for a nice ad placement. As many times as I have heard this song (like hundreds) this is the first I actually saw his video. I think he is a baritone...right?? I also feel like I should mention Haven't Met You Yet. That one is pretty great too. This one has horns, piano, and drums for sure you can pick them out pretty easy. The repeating melody from chorus is easy to pick out too. If you watched any of these do you love him yet? He is pretty adorable.

For my unfamiliar this week I once again just put classical music into YouTube and randomly picked but I added with flute this time hoping for a pretty melody. This features harp, flute, and has an orchestra in the background although they all appear to be playing the strings. The flute and harp sound so pretty together in this song. You can hear some pitch and dynamic changes when they add in more of the orchestra and then a softer sound when they go back to just the flute and harp taking the lead or being forward. When I think of classical music this is more of the sound I picture in my mind. Such a pretty melody. I know it is only 9:11 but I had to listen to it a few times trying to pick out different things. You will notice that the guy's flute is black and not the typical silver. It's nice when you can actually see them perform and you can tell which instruments are being used.

You will notice that the guy's flute is black and not the typical silver. It's nice when you can actually see them perform and you can tell which instruments are being used.

Week 2

So for my familiar music this week I picked a pretty old song from 1992 but if fits in well with this unit I think. I wanted something close to the ten minutes and thought of this song. I had forgotten about the orchestra so that worked out nice. If you have not heard it before please give it a try it was pretty amazing back in the day.:) It has an orchestra and utilizes wind, brass, stings, piano, and percussion. My favorite part is the guitar solo by Slash in the middle it's pretty amazing. In the video you can see the conductor with his baton and crazy hair leading the orchestra. I am pretty sure I picked out a four beat meter in the music. I then listened to Welcome to the Jungle to make sure I got my ten minutes in and if you haven't heard that it's pretty good too. The unfamiliar piece I selected was written by Johann Sebastian Bach. It starts out with strings and seems to be exclusively that. It was very pretty but I had a hard time picking out the count for the meter in this piece. There is a part where the strings kind of sound like they are kind of vibrating or holding the note a little and it makes a very pretty sound. Side note my six year old walked in when I was listening and asked what this music was and when I told him it was violins said "that is so boring" so I guess no future composer for me :( I honestly listened to all five+ min. but I can't say anything really stood out for me about this. I think I may have enjoyed it more it there was more instrumentation, I like to hear wind instruments in this type of music. With just the violins ( I think) it was kind of dark. I think maybe this piece is in minor and that is why it didn't appeal to me as much.

Week 1- Familiar music
Song: Colder Weather
Artist/Composer: Zac Brown Band

This is a familiar song I have heard many times. What I like about a familiar song is just that..it is familiar, I know the words and melody and I can sing along if I want. I feel more connected to a familiar song. This song is by the Zac Brown Band, a County style band which is composed of six members with Zac Brown singing lead vocals. When I hear this song I usually listen to the words and the instruments are just in the background. I really tried to listen to see what I could pick out for instruments this time. I can hear piano ( which I think is the only instrument during the opening of the song), and as the song progresses it seems to add some guitar which I believe would be called a dynamic change. Dynamic change is also used throughout the song as the vocals and instruments get louder and then softer. I am not sure why the artist/composer decided to use so few instruments but I do like how simple it is. I like how the music becomes more intense as the vocals do and then slows down again with them. I think the performance was very good, the instrumentation seems very skilled and the vocals are great with just enough background vocal support in key parts of the song. I will say it was hard for me to really listen to this song and not just sing along mindlessly.

This was the first time I have heard this piece. I listened alone so I did not have to block out much but I did struggle to keep my attention on it and had to listen several times. Without words I found it harder to relate and maintain attention. I heard many instruments but I am not sure I could pick out each one. I am sure there was a flute and other wind instruments. I think maybe a few sting instruments like a violin and cello maybe???. The music was very pretty with all the wind instruments and their unique sounds and the way they repeated with the chorus. There was an orchestra performing this piece and as the music was very smooth and clear I assume they were highly skilled. It did seem there were brief breaks in the music, I am not sure why they were put there, they were very short but noticeable enough I guess. There were also periods of greater and lesser intensity which I think added to the song and helped to maintain my interest/attention. I do not have attention issues in general but I found I did somewhat with this. I am hoping with more exposure this will not always be the case.
